Open House with the Ashebots Robotics Team

January 24, 2013 in Events by Brian Beaudet

Ashebots robotics teamCome visit the Meet the Geeks sponsored robotics team, Ashebots, as they work on the design, building, and programming of this year’s usFIRST FRC robot!  Team 4016 is preparing for the Smoky Mountain Regional tournament on March 28th in Knoxville, TN and invite you to see what they’ve been up.

This year’s challenge, ULTIMATE ASCENT, is played by two competing alliances on a flat, 27 x 54 foot field. Each Alliance consists of three robots, and they compete to score as many discs into their goals as they can during a two-minute and fifteen-second match.  The match ends with robots attempting to climb up pyramids located near the middle of the field.

The open house event will be located in the Dogwood Building on the Asheville AB Tech, Room 119.  Contact team coach Maryann Butchko for further details at maryannbutchko@yahoo.com.

7th Annual Homecoming Job Fair

December 29, 2012 in Events by Brian Beaudet

Job Fair CrowdOnce again Meet the Geeks will be participating in the Annual Homecoming Job Fair sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce on January 3 at the Biltmore Square Mall. Our goal is to ensure that people are aware of the objectives of Meet The Geeks as an organization, and to help technical professionals connect with companies who may need their services.

If your firm is currently looking for technologists, please send us any job descriptions that are currently not already actively listed on our web site. We will be happy to add them to our job list, and ensure that candidates know of your opportunity. These positions could include web developers, help desk, programmers, analysts, graphic designers, web designers, database administrators, or others. We will only be able to collect resumes, if we can make some arrangements for you to pick them up if you would like us to do that for you (we are all volunteer after all).

We are happy to list any opportunities that are technical in nature, however, we are not equipped to help with other types of opportunities (sales, marketing, financial positions, etc.). Also, if you know of other companies who may be looking for technical assistance, please feel free to forward this on to them.

From the experience at the 2012 job fair we are aware of at least 4 professionals who secured positions with local companies as a result of Meet the Geeks & the job fair. Keep us in mind if we can help either now or any time in 2013.

The job fair is on 1/3/2013 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  For more details or if you have any questions, contact jobfair@ashevillechamber.org.

Local Technology Professionals Deserve Better Wages

December 29, 2012 in News by Adam D Reich

Higher Wages for IT ProfessionalsJonathan Poston recently wrote a great article for the Asheville Citizen-Times discussing the need for higher wages for local technology professionals.  His article really hits home when looking at economic development potential for the area. It also make a strong point that if we are going to attract great talent to the area we can’t just rely on ‘free-beer’ wages.
